Our purpose is to increase knowledge and appreciation of plants, their significance and conservation, locally and globally, for the ongoing benefit and enjoyment of the community. A strategic plan (3.03Mb PDF) for 2007-2009 is available, along with a promotional summary (407Kb PDF) version.

The Board of the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium produces an Annual Report which is available to download.

Adelaide Botanic Garden on North Terrace, was founded in 1855 and opened in 1857 and is the headquarters of the organisation in South Australia. It features a glorious Victorian gardenesque landscape, including avenues of mature trees particularly Araucaria and figs and important garden buildings, ie Museum of Economic Botany, Palm House and Victoria House, and statuary.

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden at Crafers opened in 1977 and is a spectacular large hills garden on the eastern slopes of Mount Lofty, featuring cool temperate plants. Massed displays of magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias and roses are magnificent in spring and the garden is renowned for its exceptional autumn colour.

Wittunga Botanic Garden at Blackwood in the Adelaide Hills was donated to the State by the Ashby family in 1965 and combines Australian and Southern African plants. There are brilliant displays of ericas in Spring, plants from Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu Peninsula and the Sandplain Garden features Western Australian wild flowers.

These three gardens have over 1.6 million visitors each year.

Conservation Studies, Master Plan and Related Studies

Conservation studies were completed in June 2006 for both the Adelaide Botanic Garden (including Botanic Park) and the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden. The studies provide:

  • a brief history of the development of each Garden
  • an analysis and assessment for each Garden in the context of their role as Botanic Gardens, their landscape design, individual garden components and collections, and of their cultural significance
  • recommendations for conservation works

A Master Plan Report for the Adelaide Botanic Garden (including Botanic Park) and the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden has also been completed and is currently being finalised for printing. The Report provides clear direction for the future enhancement and development of each Garden, both in the form of defined strategic directions and actions, and through the preparation of site master plans for each Garden. The factors that have influenced each Garden have been analysed and key issues identified. These have been grouped into four categories:

  • Gardens
  • Collections and Interpretation
  • Visitor Facilities and Services
  • Linkages and Partnerships
