Spring has sprung!

Our spring planting blitz in the Kitchen Garden has begun and an incredible 1806 seedlings were planted on Wednesday 2 September. This is the most that have ever been planted in one go! The previous record was about 800. The trainees were responsible for propagating them from seed at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden Nursery. These seedlings were then planted by our trainee horticulturalists here at Adelaide Botanic Garden.

It has been wonderful to be able to welcome back schools to the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden Learning Programme. The children and attending adults have certainly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time in the garden with our educators and experience the joys of this wonderful hands-on programme.

Highgate School and Southern Montessori School have planted carrots, beans and potatoes, which have all germinated, and will add to the produce that kindergartens and schools can take back with them.

The wicking beds were planted with kale, lettuce, beetroot and other plants.

Children involved in the Little Sprouts Programme were lucky enough to harvest over 60 beetroots which went back to school with the participants.

As with most gardens at this time of year, weeds have been pulled out and nets have been put over all the young plants to protect them from the ducks.
