School holiday program July 2019

Bring your children along to one of our awesome school holiday activities from Monday 8 July through to Saturday 19 July.

There's something for everyone: budding gardeners, plant and animal lovers and crafty types!

Whatever your little one is in to, each event has been designed to promote fun, hands-on learning about plants, animals and the environment.

Suitable for 5-13 year olds but big kids and parents alike will enjoy the activities too!

Please note that all children must be accompanied by a parent/caregivers at all times. Tickets are only required for children - parent/caregiver attends FREE.

Parents are encouraged to book early – spots will sell out!


Gardening themed activities

Composting is fun!

The secret to a great garden is great compost! 

Unearth the secret to making compost at home, including how composting works, what materials to use and how to encourage the right microbes. 

A healthy composting system is a great, sustainable way of getting rid of food and garden scraps while improving your garden’s health, look and productivity. Plus, it's fun!

Healthy gardeners

Let your children get their hands dirty in the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden.

Kids will have the opportunity to plant and harvest vegetables, hold wriggly worms from our worm farm. It's the perfect way to learn how growing your own food at home is fun and good for your health.

Aboriginal plant use

Join Trent, Indigenous storyteller, educator and guide, on a fascinating walk through beautiful Adelaide or Wittunga Botanic Garden. 

Explore the traditional uses of plants by Aboriginal people, and find out how nature and the surroundings would influence where Aboriginal people lived depending on the season.

Plant Hunter’s Treasure hunt

Embark on a treasure hunt to learn about some weird and wonderful fruits produced by different trees in Adelaide Botanic Garden. Ever heard of a sausage tree? 

Children and parents will work together by following a map around the Garden to unravel clues that solve the Plant Hunter’s riddle.

Bugs in the BiCon

Are you feeling brave? Brave enough to try some tasty snacks made from bugs?! Here's your chance!

In this exciting July School Holiday event, find out all about insects. Discover how they live, why they are critical for our survival...and how they taste!

Insects are the most diverse group of animals on earth and children will see a range of these 'bugs' including scorpions, leeches, spiders and stick insects on display in the magical and iconic Bicentennial Conservatory.

Native wildlife show

Get up close and personal with a range of wildlife, including snakes, lizards, insects, frogs and sugar gliders.

Wildlife walk

Enjoy a walk through Adelaide or Mount Lofty Botanic Garden to learn which animals call these beautiful landscapes home, how they live and what threats they face in the wild. 

At Adelaide Botanic Garden, look out for cockatoos and parrots, flying foxes, freshwater turtles and frogs. At Mount Lofty, look out for kangaroos, koalas, native birds and bandicoots.

Craft themed activities

Beginner’s papermaking

Children will get creative and discover how used paper can be pulped and recycled to make fine, light-weight paper in this hands-on activity.

Papermaker Tracy King will teach you the core skills of making paper using a single mesh, and how to create personalised stationary, including cards, envelopes, writing paper and gift tags embedded with seeds that can be planted and grown at home. Participants will also learn how to marble handmade paper using water-based paints.

Take all your creations home with you to keep, or share with family and friends.

Advanced papermaking

Learn more advanced paper making skills involving a two-mesh system and how to create paper that incorporates flowers and leaves to make your own sustainable garden-themed stationary.

Bushland babies

Create bushland babies and cute critters to take home using curious botanical seeds and pods collected from around the Botanic Garden.

Children and caregivers work together to combine leaves, sticks and googly eyes to bring imagined creatures to life!

Not suitable for children under 6 years due to the use of hot glue.
