School Holidays at the Botanic Gardens


 

 

Our school holiday program is back, packed with hands-on activities to engage young minds about plants, people and the environment. Activities are held in Adelaide and Mount Lofty Botanic Garden and are suitable for children aged between 5-13 years. For more information, download our program flyer

Papermaking (8-13 years)

When: 10am and 2:30pm on 15 April 2019, 10am on 16 April 2019 (1.5 hour sessions)
Where:  Goodman Building, Adelaide Botanic Garden

Explore the process of papermaking with Tracy, as you transform recycled paper pulp into beautiful handmade stationery to take home. Once the core foundations (a simple 4 step routine) are mastered you can choose to make paper sheets, envelopes or hearts. Add some seeds to the paper so it will become a Seeded Card to plant after use. Choose your favourite colours to make your own marbled paper or add petals. Your paper stack will be pressed in the paper press ready for you to take home to dry.

Autumn Colours Mobile Photography (9-13 years)

When: 10:30am on 16 and 17 April 2019 (1.5 hour sessions). CANCELLED: Due to a severe fire danger rating in the Mount Lofty Ranges, the Mobile Photography workshop on Wednesday 17 April has to be cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Capture Mount Lofty Botanic Garden’s stunning autumn display on your own mobile device! Learn about mobile device photography skills, macro photography using a 30x lens attachment (provided), and how to edit your photos using mobile apps while exploring the beautiful Garden.

Please bring your own tablet or mobile device. Participants are required to download the free App “Snapseed” to their device prior to the session. 

Wilbur’s Wildlife (5-12 years)

When: 2:30pm on 23 April 2019, 10am and 11:30am on 26 April 2019 (1 hour sessions)
Where: Schomburgk Pavilion, Adelaide Botanic Garden

Meet a range of wildlife including snakes, lizards, insects, frogs and sugar gliders. Learn about the biology and habitat of some of the native animals. Let Cale show you how to hold and care for them and what you can do to help make sure their environment is safe from harm.

Garden Critters (6-12yrs)

When: 2:30pm on 18 April 2019 (1 hour session)
Where: Goodman Building, Adelaide Botanic Garden

Create cute critters to take home using curious botanic bits. Combine leaves, sticks and googly eyes to bring your imagined creature to life! Due to use of hot glue guns during workshop, parents/carers must work with their children at all times; children under 6yrs cannot be admitted into the activity.

Aboriginal Plant Use (All Ages)

When: 10am on 18 and 23 April 2019 (1 hour)
Where:  Friends' Gate, Adelaide Botanic Garden

Join Indigenous storyteller, educator and guide Trent on an hour walk through the Australian Forest, investigating the traditional uses of trees and plants by Aboriginal people, and relating seasonal movements to the surroundings.

Storytime (5-10 yrs)

When: 10:00am on 17 April 2019 (CANCELLED) and 2:30pm on 24 April 2019 (45 minutes)

Storyteller, Janet Leitch, will share folk tales and legends from around the world. The captivating tales she shares will lead you on imaginative journeys over mountains, through forests and jungles, and introduce you to the wonderful animals and characters that people these stories.
