Students will undertake hands-on fieldwork to assess the health of the First Creek Wetland, an urban freshwater ecosystem within Adelaide Botanic Garden. They will understand the wetland’s role as a stormwater recycling system. They will collect, record and analyse abiotic and biotic data as part of a comprehensive ecosystem assessment.

Through this investigation, students will develop an understanding of wetland biodiversity, ecosystem relationships, dynamic interactions, and the interconnectedness of living and non-living components.

Workshops are available for Year 7 to Year 12 students.

Students will

• Understand the role of First Creek Wetland as a constructed stormwater recycling system, and a living ecosystem.
• Identify and classify macroinvertebrate species, to analyse sensitivity-to-pollution scales and monitor biodiversity.
• Use scientific sampling techniques to carry out an assessment of a freshwater aquatic ecosystem. Abiotic parameters are likely to include pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, and total dissolved solids.
• Make observations of ecological relationships and systems.
• Observe and audit wetland wildlife/birdlife, noting behaviours.
