Opuntia and Olea: Stories of Adaptation

Discover a world where plants tell stories of migration, resilience, and transformation.

This striking outdoor exhibition by Australian-Italian artist Giuseppe Matteo Pappalardo, presented as part of The Guildhouse Collections Project, invites you to see nature and culture, from a new perspective.

Giuseppe’s work explores how the meaning and value of plants shift when they cross borders. In the Mediterranean, olives and prickly pear are revered plants, embedded in the culture, cuisine, and history of the region. Here in South Australia, they’re considered invasive weeds. Through this process, Giuseppe reflects on his own journey of migration and adaptation.

Over eight months at the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium (BGSH), Giuseppe immersed himself in living collections and cultural archives, collaborating with experts to create a series of thought-provoking installations.

From 7 December 2025 - 28 February 2026, you'll discover five captivating artworks thoughtfully placed throughout Adelaide Botanic Garden that invite you to pause, reflect, and rediscover the plants you thought you knew.

BGSH have been involved with the Guildhouse Collections project for the last 10 years. This highly sought after artist-led research project provides artists the opportunity to research South Australia's cultural collections and then create meaningful new work.
