Calling all budding green thumbs!  Gather the whole family for a fun, community celebration of seeds and home gardening at the beautiful Adelaide Botanic Garden.

Saving seeds is a great way to cut down on gardening costs and protect biodiversity, but best of all it’s a great way to connect with a community of like-minded garden lovers by swapping and sharing your saved seeds.

We wanted to create a seed swap event that everyone can enjoy, seed-saver or not, so we bring you: The Great Botanic Seed Swap and Share!

Bring in your saved seeds to share and leave with something new to plant in your garden. If you don’t have any saved seeds, don’t worry! For a small donation, you can purchase tokens to swap for seeds. This means that everyone gets to take part and share the bounty, with all donations going directly to the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre.

There is plenty to see and do, with stall holders, kid's activities, guest appearances, live music, and even a sausage sizzle!

Join the team at the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium to celebrate growing, sharing and connecting through seeds this Nature Festival.

Scroll further down this page to see Plan Your Visit below for more information on how to be involved in this day.

This event is a fundraiser for the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre. Your ticket includes entry to the event; some activities have a small additional cost of $2.00. Profits from this day will be donated to the science and conservation work of the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre.

Event Details

Dates: Sunday 11 October 2026

Times: 10:00am - 12:00pm and 12:15pm - 2:15pm

Location: Rose Garden Pavilion, Adelaide Botanic Garden (C6 on the map)

Tickets: $15.00 per person

Children 12 and under are free, ticket required

If you have seeds to donate, that’s great! We’ll exchange them for some tokens so you select something different to take home. Don’t have any seeds to share? That’s ok too! You can purchase tokens by a small donation to the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre so you can too can ‘shop’ the seeds on offer.

This seed swap is for common kitchen garden and companion plants. For biosecurity reasons, please don’t bring in wild-collected seeds, or those from plants on the declared weeds list. If you are an avid seed saver or part of a community garden network and have lots of something to share we’d love to hear from you before the day! We’d love to have plenty to share with those who are new to gardening, so please contact us (and we’ll sort you out with a free ticket??)

Are you giving away seeds from the Botanic Gardens collections?

No, only common kitchen garden and companion plants will be shared at the seed swap.

So much! Think of it is as a village fete for seeds. Stalls, short talks, live music, children’s activities, a sausage sizzle for the Seed Conservation Centre, and more.

Plus other ticketed activities on the day!

We have split the day into two sessions to make sure as many people as possible get to enjoy the seed swap. 1 – 2 hours should be plenty of time to enjoy the activities. Don’t forget to leave time to explore the rest of the Botanic Garden while you are here, or book into one of our other Nature Festival events on the same day (WPY, artist workshop, tours, jerry’s talk)
