Teacher Professional Development

** The safety and well-being of our visitors, volunteers and staff is our highest priority.

We are mindful of growing concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and are following all federal and state government policy and directives. We are closely monitoring updates through SA Health and the impact of COVID-19 on our community.

As a precautionary measure, we are suspending all education and public programs until the end of May 2020.  

This includes the Teacher Professional Development workshops listed below. If you are booked onto any of these activities, we will notify you of your options and next steps.



Our friendly education team deliver professional development sessions for all teaching staff throughout the year, from pre-school to senior secondary.

We cover a wide range of concepts and all sessions are aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers Framework, with certificates of attendance issued upon completion.

We offer professional development sessions either at a botanic garden or at your site.

Here are our Educator Professional Development Events coming up in Adelaide Botanic Garden:

Food glorious food - POSTPONED

Plants have been grown by humans as a source of food for thousands of years. Given the expected increases to global population and challenges such as diminishing water supplies, declining amounts of arable land and climate change, the ability for our farmers and scientists to produce enough food is critical for our survival.

Join us on a journey of discovery through Adelaide Botanic Garden and learn about the history of edible plants through a social, economic and geographic lens.

When:  Wednesday 6 May, 4.30pm to 6pm

Bees, pollination and sustainability - POSTPONED

To help celebrate World Bee Day join us at Adelaide Botanic Garden for an educator workshop all about bees!

Come and learn about the difference between honey bees and Australian bees and why bees are of such importance globally.  

The workshop will provide you with tips on how you can encourage bees to your home or school garden and you will also get to build your own native bee hotel.

When:  Wednesday 20 May, 4.30pm to 6.30pm

Aboriginal Plant Use - POSTPONED

This teacher professional development workshop will focus on how Aboriginal groups use plants to live and survive.

Aboriginal histories and cultures and intercultural understanding is woven throughout the Australian curriculum.

Join Indigenous educator Trent Hill and Botanic Gardens education staff to learn about the importance of plants to Aboriginal people and how they are used as food, medicine, tools and shelter.

Trent will lead you on a walk around Adelaide Botanic Garden highlighting plant species and demonstrating how Aboriginal people used these plants in their daily lives.

Botanic Gardens education staff will then showcase more resources and programs that are available to further strengthen your student’s intercultural understanding.

When:  Thursday 28 May, 4.30pm to 6pm

Kitchen Garden

Join us for a kitchen garden workshop which aims to support and inspire educators to connect children with kitchen gardens.

The workshop will also provide an opportunity for participants to share practice and talk with fellow educators from other sites.

Registration is $90 incl GST (+booking fee). Pre-service (student) teachers receive a 25% discount - email us at DEWBGSchools@sa.gov.au to find out the discount code before registering.
