Teacher Professional Development

We are pleased that we are now able to re-activate our Teacher Professional Development Programme at the botanic gardens!

Our friendly education team deliver professional development sessions for all teaching staff, from pre-school to senior secondary.

We cover a wide range of concepts and all sessions are aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers Framework, with certificates of attendance issued upon completion.

We offer professional development sessions either at a botanic garden or at your site.

The safety and well-being of our visitors, volunteers and staff remains our highest priority and, in preparation for welcoming back teachers to our upcoming workshops, we are implementing COVID-19 compliant protocols to offer a safe and meaningful experience for all that attend.

Measures include:

  • Appropriate group sizes to ensure physical distancing can be adhered to as well as ensuring the quality of the workshop
  • Venues and spaces used during the workshop compliant with density requirements (2sqm)
  • Practicing of good hygiene before, during and after the workshop
  • Participants must continue to maintain physical distance (1.5m)
  • Participants must not attend if they are unwell

Participants will also find out how students can utilise STEM skills to investigate the essential roles of bees in pollination.

This professional development workshop is aligned to the Australian National Teaching Standards and a certificate of attendance will be issued.

Aboriginal Plant Use

This teacher professional development workshop will focus on how Aboriginal groups use plants to live and survive.

Aboriginal histories and cultures and intercultural understanding is woven throughout the Australian curriculum.

Join Indigenous educator, Trent Hill, and Botanic Gardens education staff to learn about the importance of plants to Aboriginal people and how they are used as food, medicine, tools and shelter.

Trent will lead you on a walk around Adelaide Botanic Garden highlighting plant species and demonstrating how Aboriginal people used these plants in their daily lives.

Botanic Gardens education staff will then showcase more resources and programs that are available to further strengthen your student’s intercultural understanding.

SA Aboriginal Contexts in Science Initiative

Sharon Robertson and Donna Shillingford from the Department for Education will explain the role this project has in collaboratively developing resources with Aboriginal Elders, Community members and educators.

The Initiative’s aim is to embed South Australian Aboriginal understandings, knowledge and ways of knowing into high quality science teaching resources that are aligned with the new 95 Science Elaborations within the Australian Curriculum: Science Years 7-10.

An activity aligned to the Australian Curriculum Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross curriculum priority will be introduced to participants.
